2015 Holiday Gift Guide for Outdoorsy People
Got some outdoorsy people on your list? Most people who love the outdoors and outdoor sports can be into a number of sports, for example, many skiers also hike, also camp, and so on. So, to be general we created a comprehensive list of a few of our favorite outdoor gear and clothing that most outdoorsy people will appreciate, regardless of what their favorite outdoor pursuit is.
Here is a list of stuff we love!
1. Icebreaker Base Layer
Not all base layers are created the same. Icebreaker continues to be a leader in merino wool clothing. Icebreaker is the priciest merino wool base layer, is more expensive for a reason: it’s the highest quality merino wool with the best quality stitchings and cuts. It comes in many cuts and colours, up to the very fashionable. Everyone will appreciate having and Icebreaker merino wool layer, regardless of activity. They are great in every application.
Our favorite is the Oasis Long Sleeve Crew, perfect for layering in the winter.
These layers are available from Backcountry.com and REI and many other stores.
2. Headlamp
Headlamps have so many applications beyond just hiking or camping in the dark it’s impossible to list them all. They are also an essential survival piece that everyone who ventures into the backcountry should carry just in case. They are also useful around the house, if the power goes out, or in your car for emergencies. They are also perfect for reading in bed if you don’t want to bother your tent or bed mate.
So, if the person on your list doesn’t have one, or has an old one, surprise them with a new headlamp. The latest headlamps also have the coolest features, which include a red light that doesn’t destroy your night vision like white light does.
Our pick is the Petzl Tikka RXP which automatically adjusts light without the touch of a button and is USB chargeable. It retails for $94.95 at REI.com.
3. Adventure Medical Kit
Experienced guides don’t head into the backcountry without a first aid kit, and you shouldn’t either.
We like the one for day trippers, which is useful for day use, retails for $32.95 at Backcountry.com.
4. Down Jacket
There are not many people who don’t like down jackets for the winter. Ounce for ounce, they are the best insulating jackets out there. Ultralight and packable, they are also practical. Stuff them and throw in your backpack to have in case it gets cold out there, or use them as a pillow. They are a bit more expensive, so splurge on this gift for someone you want to spoil.
Our pick? The Mountain Hardwear Ghost Whisperer. It’s currently on sale for 30% off at Backcountry.com.
5. Light My Fire
This handy little firestarter is a neat little thing to have around. It generates sparks even when wet. It has a new striker features an ergonomic grip, works well in any temperature, at any altitude, dry or wet. The latest model even includes a whistle in case of emergency.
The Light My FireSteel Scout 2.0 Fire Starter retails for $14.95 at REI.com.
6. Down Gloves
When cold weather hits, everyone can use a pair of down gloves or mittens. Our pick is the Cross Country skiing brand AuClair, which makes some of the cosiest and most waterproof mittens and gloves out there. Try the High Country Down Gloves, which retail for $147 but are on sale for $63 at Sierra Trading Post.
7. Backpack
A backpack is another item that is useful for any outdoorsy person on your list. Good for city or mountains, summer or winter, any time of year. A pack that is around 30 litres is a very practical size – you won’t run out of space, and will always will have extra space for those little just in case things in the mountains, such as extra food or clothing.
A ski/snowboard pack will also allow you to attach your skis or board to the pack itself for transport. Improved access and organization allows you quick access for those emergency items.
Our current favourite is the Osprey Kode 32 pack. We recently gave this pack away in our last giveaway. Available from Backcountry.com for $104.96 (regular price is $149.95)
8. Camp Stove
A camp stove is a great gift to give. It is a highly researched and thought through purchase. So why not make it easier for them by selecting on of the best stoves on the market? The JetBoil is quick, lightweight and convenient. The all in one system comes with a burner, pot and stabilizer stand. Check out the Jetboil Zip at Sierra Trading Post (currently 20% off) and the Jetboil Flash at REI for $99.95. Boil 2 cups of water in 2 minutes!
We like the Jetboil stoves because they are the fastest at boiling water and the canister makes it convenient and clean. Other great canister stoves is the MSR Pocket Rocket. It is a little bit cheaper since it does not come with an insulated pot. It retails for $39.95, and will be on sale for $19.95 on Black Friday at REI.
We love the Jetboil stoves and in the past have reviewed the Jetboil Flash Stove.
9. Down Booties
Everyone loves down booties. The adventurer on your list will at some point visit a backcountry hut and will appreciate having a warm, lightweight pair of slippers. Regardless, hut booties are great to have around the house too. We recommend the REI Down booties which retail for $44.50. We’ve also heard that these will be marked down on Black Friday!
10. Leatherman multi tool
One of these tools is a practical thing to have in your backpack. It’s convenient and you never really know when you’re going to need it. It’s perfect for first aid use and for use around camp, for fixing and adjusting gear, for example ski bindings, boots, buckles and more. The applications are limitless.
