4 Signs to Watch for to Retire Your Running Shoes
Running shoes don’t last forever. If you’re an avid runner, you can tell that you don’t get the same cushioning and support after you’ve been running the shoe for awhile. Though holes are an obvious sign that your shoe is breaking down fast, there are more subtle signs you need to check for. The most common indicators are:
1. Tread shows significant wear in one or more sections of the outsole
Once the tread has been rubbed off to the point where there is none left, or, you can see the material underneath, you need new shoes. The bottom provides significant shock absorption and without it it will be quite hard on your body.
2. The foot bed, or inner sock liner, is showing holes, signs of wear or frayed in a certain area
The soft foam and fabric liner is usually rather thin and sensitive to damage. Damage to this liner will change the way the shoe fits, and can cause blisters or hotspots if not dealt with. It can also cause the shoe to slip around on your foot during a run, meaning potential injury.
3. The midsole of the shoe neither looks the way it used to nor absorbs impact the same way
Once the midsole has become rather pliable to manual manipulation, it means the midsole has gotten packed out and lost it’s resilience. Of course, you can usually feel this when you’re running, the shoe feels “dead” like it’s not absorbing impact the same way, or you may even notice it just by looking at it, the shoe having a deformed appearance.
4. Upper laces on the shoe are showing significant wear
Running shoes are much more durable these days, so it is unlikely that you will show wear through the toe box. Normally, laces are so strong they will far outlast the life of the shoe. Therefore, if your laces are stretched, frayed or if it’s impossible to tighten them anymore, it is a solid sign that your running shoes are very worn.
Not just running shoes
The beauty of this list is it’s not just for running shoes, you can apply it to hiking shoes and boots as well. Check out the sole, foot bed, tread and laces on your favourite hiking shoes to assess if they need to be replaced.
With hiking shoes, the tread is one of the most important things.
