Mt. Field Ski Ascent
Mt. Field Ski Ascent – Canadian Rockies Classic
Located near the Town of Field, BC in Yoho Park, Mount Field towers over 1300 meters (4265 feet) above Yoho Valley. Mount Field has become a classic ski mountaineering ascent in the Canadian Rockies. Its 2635 m (8650 foot) summit is a nice prize. Reaching the summit in the winter requires good weather, good visibility and excellent snow stability.
This was an Alpine Club of Canada trip I lead for the Calgary ACC section on April 20th, 2013. Taking advantage of a high pressure weather system and excellent overnight freeze we departed Calgary at 5:30 in the morning arriving in Yoho just after 9 am.
Over the course of 9 kilometres, Alicja, Piotr, Carl, Matt and I skied and climbed a total of 1300 m of elevation with a quick lunch break at around 2100 meters. We ere rewarded by an awesome 1300 m (~4300 ft) ski descents with close to 20 cm’s of winter like powder in the middle of April!
Check out the photos below which best tell the story of our incredible ski day in the Canadian Rockies.
