How to survive a free solo fall
This climber is lucky to escape with minor injuries after falling off a cliff he was free soloing. Climber Mike already had been up this route several times that day, a 5.9 called “Grab Your Balls,” located on a cliff called Breakneck in Southwest Pennsylvania.
He had hung a top rope for other climbers to take advantage of the climb, and at the end of the day decided to take one more run on it. The rope hangs on the route as he free solos it, untied to the rope. The 40 foot cliff has one crux section near the top, about 35 feet off the ground. This is where the climber grabbed an edge, fully extended, began to pull up and suddenly slipped, taking the fall of his life.
He escaped with only minor injuries. Watch the video of the fall and as he talks to beginner climbers about his choice to free solo.
