1. MugMate coffee or tea filter, $16.95
Any coffee lover will appreciate this gift. It’s packable and light, and means you can enjoy proper coffee in the backcountry without having to carry a heavy and bulky percolator. The MugMate by MSR retails for $16.95. Give with a bag of ground coffee for an extra special gift.
The filter can also be used for loose leaf tea. Convenient, and eco-friendly.
2. Two person Mess Kit, $34.95
The backpackers mess kit is a great welcome addition to any camping pantry. You’ve got lightweight bowls, utensils that fold, and two insulated cups. This one is from MSR.
3. Ultralight Pot, $47.95
An ultralight pot is always appreciated. A good quality pot will last years. A good one doubles as a pot, mug or bowl. Try the Titan Kettle from MSR: it holds 0.85 L of liquid and has a spout, too.
4. Strike Igniter, $14.95
I got one of these a few years ago and have been using it ever since. It’s very handy, you don’t have to worry about fumbling with matches or lighters. The latest one even comes with a whistle. Our favourite is the Light My Fire Scout fire starter tool.
5. Universal gearloft for tens, $29.95
A gearloft is a great accessory for a tent that you can use to store items, for example books. Keeps things tidy and organized in the tent. Provides space saving overhead storage. Prices will vary but are generally around $30.
6. Blizzard tent stakes, $4.95
Tent stakes are very useful and a high quality lightweight set is great to have, like these Blizzard stakes from MSR.
Tent stakes have a tendency to go missing – we do not know even one camper who hasn’t lost a few of their tent stakes. Give them nice, ultralight tent stakes. The ones we like best are made by MSR, and are sold individually.
7. Camping Mugs, $10 or less
This cheap but very thoughtful gifts is one of our favourites. This plastic cub has a neoprene sleeve and fabric handle to keep things light and the bulk to a minimum. A good camping mug also makes for a great bowl. Use it to eat from and drink from. Our favourites are made by GSI, and I have been using the GSI infinity backpacker mug for years and take it everywhere.
8. Camp Suds, $7.95
We discovered the Campsuds brand of camp soap last summer, and now swear by it. It works in fresh and salt water, smells great, is gentle, biodegradable and you can even use it on your hands and clothing.
9. Headlamp
It’s really hard to have too many headlamps around. They are so handy and useful for so many applications. They range in price but you can get a good quality one for under $50, like the Black Diamond Cosmo. Learn how to choose best headlamp.

Winter and summer, the spork is the best. Lightweight, unbreakable and easy to clean, our favourite is the Snow Peak titanium spork.
